Let’s talk about hashtags. No, not just the trendy ones like #blessed or #ThrowbackThursday – we’re talking about real-deal strategy that helps your content get found by the right people.

If you’ve been throwing hashtags on your posts as an afterthought (or just copy-pasting from old captions), it’s time for a refresh. Because hashtags aren’t just for organizing content anymore – they’re a social media SEO tool that can boost your visibility, grow your audience, and get your content in front of people who actually want what you’re offering.

Why Hashtags Still Matter in 2025

It’s easy to assume hashtags are outdated or “don’t really do anything”, but that’s far from the truth. On platforms like Instagram, hashtags are still one of the most powerful ways to categorize your content and increase discoverability.

Think of them like keywords for your posts. The right ones tell the algorithm what your content is about and help potential followers or customers find you.

3 Rules for Smarter Hashtag Use

Ready to use hashtags with intention? Here’s what to keep in mind:

1. Use Relevant Hashtags That Match Your Post

We’re leaving behind the days of throwing random hashtags on a post just because they’re trending. Instead, choose hashtags that actually make sense for what you’re sharing.

For example, posting a behind-the-scenes of your café’s brunch special? Use #PhillyBrunch or #CafeVibes, not #MotivationMonday just because it’s Monday. Relevance helps you reach people already interested in your content.

2. Don’t Be Afraid of Popular Hashtags – Just Don’t Go Too Broad

Yes, popular hashtags have a ton of competition, but they also come with a higher volume of eyeballs. It’s okay to include a few high-traffic hashtags, just make sure you’re not going so broad that your post gets lost.

Mix in a variety:

  • Niche hashtags (1K–10K posts)
  • Mid-size hashtags (10K–500K)
  • Popular hashtags (500K–1M+)

This gives your post a better chance of being seen both now and over time.

3. Drop 4–6 Hashtags in Your Caption (Not the First Comment)

Gone are the days of stuffing 30 hashtags in the comments. Instagram now fully indexes the caption first, so if you want your hashtags to work, keep them in the main caption.

💙 Pro tip: 4–6 thoughtfully chosen hashtags are better than 30 random ones.

Let’s Be Strategic, Not Random

Hashtags shouldn’t be an afterthought – they should be a part of your overall content strategy. Used well, they help your posts reach new people, support your goals, and even improve your engagement.

If hashtag strategy feels like one more thing to figure out, you don’t have to do it alone. I help businesses create content that’s not just pretty—but purposeful, strategic, and actually working for you.
