If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me, “Should I be on TikTok?” I could probably fund my Target runs for the rest of the year (and maybe throw in a couple Alani cases while I’m at it).

Here’s the truth: not every business needs a TikTok. That might sound strange coming from someone who literally helps brands grow on social media for a living, but I’m not here to waste your time or mine.

Let’s break it down based on audience, time, and goals so you can figure out if TikTok is a smart move for your business… or just another shiny thing that will stress you out.

✅ TikTok: The Pros

1. Reach is wild (in a good way)
TikTok’s algorithm is next-level. If you create engaging content, even with zero followers, you can hit thousands of views. It’s one of the few places where organic growth is still very alive.

2. It’s where the vibes live
If your brand is fun, visual, educational, or storytelling-heavy (think: lifestyle, beauty, fitness, home, food, etc.), TikTok is your playground. It’s a space to show personality and connect in a real, unfiltered way.

3. Gen Z and Millennials are locked in
If your audience skews younger (under 40), they’re probably scrolling TikTok before they even brush their teeth. If that’s your demo, showing up here makes sense.

4. Repurpose, repurpose, repurpose
You can turn Reels into TikToks, TikToks into Reels, Stories into Clips… content can live in more than one place. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel for every platform.

❌ TikTok: The Cons

1. It takes time and a certain energy
TikTok trends move fast. If you’re not into keeping up, filming video content regularly, or hopping on sounds within 48 hours, it might not be worth the effort.

2. You need to actually be social
You can’t just post and ghost. Engagement matters: comments, duets, stitches, interacting with others. If your team can’t handle that, results may fall flat.

3. Not every audience is hanging out there
If your ideal client is 50+, or you’re in a highly corporate or niche B2B space, TikTok may not be where they’re spending their time. And that’s okay.

4. It can burn you out
Let’s be honest: keeping up with trends, posting 3-5x a week, AND editing video content can be draining especially if social isn’t your full-time job.

So… Should You Be on TikTok?

Ask yourself:

  • Who am I trying to reach? Are they scrolling TikTok or reading newsletters?
  • What are my goals? Awareness? Sales? Community?
  • Do I have the time (or help) to show up consistently?
  • Does my brand translate well to short-form video?

If the answer is yes to most of those, then yes, TikTok might be your new BFF.

If not? Focus on doing fewer platforms really well. You’ll get better results from strong Instagram or LinkedIn content than trying to “kind of” do TikTok while secretly dreading every second of it.

Final Thought:
TikTok can be an incredible tool, but only if it makes sense for your business. Social media should feel aligned, not anxiety-inducing.
