What My Dogs Taught Me About Brand Loyalty

You don’t have to teach a doodle to be loyal, but they just might teach you a thing or two about branding.

If you know us, you know we’re obsessed with our dogs, Bentley and Lainey. They’re sweet, a little spoiled, and wildly loyal. And the more I watch them (and let’s be real, talk to them like they’re humans), the more I realize: brand loyalty isn’t all that different from the bond between you and your favorite four-legged friend.

Here’s what Bentley and Lainey reminded me about building a brand people stick with:

1. Consistency Builds Trust
My dogs know the sound of the treat bag, the timing of walks, and exactly when they’ll get belly rubs. That routine? It creates security. Your brand should work the same way. When you show up consistently with the same tone, values, and quality, your audience learns to trust you.

2. Emotional Connection is Everything
My dogs don’t love me because I give them food (well… not just because). It’s the cuddles on the couch, the goofy voices, and the love I show them daily. The best brands create that same emotional resonance. They make people feel something. Don’t just market…connect.

3. Be Their Favorite, Not Just an Option
Lainey will walk past five toys to get to her favorite. Same with brands. People don’t want just another business; they want their brand. The one that just gets them. That’s what you should aim to be: not the only option, but the obvious one.

4. Loyalty is Earned
It took time to build that deep connection with my dogs. You can’t rush loyalty, and you definitely can’t fake it. Show up, serve well, be authentic. People will notice and they’ll stick around.

Your audience might not wag their tails when they see you pop up on Instagram, but if you build your brand the right way, they’ll come back, time and time again.

Because just like our dogs, people remember how you make them feel.
